Why is Bob's Job so special?

We start our short story in the suburbs of Detroit with two middle class couples who have five small kids between them. Every day they would hear the same enthusiastic, childhood proclamation. "Mom, Dad, I know what I want to be when I grow up!" Of course, this astonishing self discovery would change daily to something completely different, but the spark of innocent excitement and youthful determination remained constant.

The two fathers in this story, Tom Daldin and Rick Yarmy, often thought, "What a wonderful and natural daily phenomenon this is for a child. There must be a program for kids that help them fantasize and visualize their future. A video that stimulates ambition, a strong self image, imagination and maybe even some good old fashioned brain development. With all the resources and educational experts out there, there must be a program that highlights careers for kids. Or is there?"

To their amazement, it seemed all television was offering kids were science, nature, cartoons, puppet and mindless cable game shows. What about children's futures...what about careers?

This is where our two dads lost all control of their senses and decided to try and make a difference in Kids TV. They began what has now become a fulfilling, five year odyssey. One dad (a burned out radio station executive) quit his job and joined the other dad who ran a small video production company in Troy, Michigan. Together, (along with insights and inspiration from their wives and kids), they tightened their belts and spent nights, weekends, and holidays producing a program that shows kids the childlike quality adults have when they love what they do for a living.

The show is different...They shoot it documentary style and feature a lovable character named BOB, (played by Tom), who shares the fascinating and fun part of the adult work place with kids. Another great twist to the show is that the featured guest isn't simply shown on his or her job. The show's silly host follows them from the moment they roll out of bed in the morning, until their head hits the pillow at night.  The message at the end of each episode is a fundamental and valuable one.  "Keep reading, do well in school, and don't stop dreaming."

Tom and Rick's goal is to show that if you love what you do for a living, any job can be fulfilling.  You don't have to be a rock, sports, or movie star to have a fun, challenging and rewarding life. The
show has received rave reviews from parents and kids at elementary schools. Northwest Airlines regularly uses the program when visiting elementary schools all around the United States.  Bob's Job gives kids good, solid role models with realistic and obtainable goals by showing them adults who are happy, challenged and fulfilled because they love what they do for a living.  Bob's Job helps elementary age children realize the connection between what they learn in school and a promising and rewarding future.

The creators of Bob's Job are very proud of the fact that the show won three EMMY and five national Telly Awards for outstanding content, production, and acting in a children's program.  All three episodes of the program aired in Detroit on PBS member station WTVS, Detroit Public Television.  We were honored and pleased by its reception from the show's audience.  Tom and Rick are currently hard at work producing future episodes of Bob's Job. Why Bob's Job?

Bob's Job fills a tremendous void in children's educational entertainment.  There are tons of cartoon, animal, science, and TV game shows out there for kids, but no one is talking to today's youth about the endless possibilities for their future.  No one is showing kids what it's really like to be a grown-up.

Elementary age children are at a crucial stage in their development where they are forming attitudes about learning, work, and most importantly adult values.  But kids have a difficult time seeing the connection between what they learn in the classroom and future careers.  Bob's Job gives kids an inspirational and realistic view of the world of work all the while illustrating their eventual inclusion in it.

Bob's Job is a children's educational program that show kids the child-like enthusiasm adults have when they truly love what they do for a living.  Does everyone love their job?  No.  Should everyone love their job?  Yes.  This our mission at Bob's Job.  The program inspires young people by showing them real, everyday working heroes who are happy and fulfilled because they love what they do.

The Silly Guy We Call Bob

The character Bob is admittedly, and by design, very silly indeed.  His enthusiastic and innocent sense of humor gives him a solid connection with kids while his never ending quest for knowledge motivates and inspires young minds.  Bob's philosophy is simple - laugh while you learn, and before you know it...you know it!

Bob is not only silly - he's childlike - like his audience.  Kids see him as one of them - an occupational tour guide that thinks the way they do.

Yes, Bob may be silly, but the message he gives is so very valuable.  At the end of each and every show, Bob looks the kids right in the eye and says: "Promise you'll do three things for me.  Keep reading, do well in school, and whatever you do, don't stop dreaming."

After all, that's what this program is really all about...giving our kids the strong self image, confidence and knowledge to do just that...follow their dreams.

We are also proud that the program has been offered for retail purchase nationally.  Here are just a few examples of retail outlets who have purchased Bob's Job:
